Mt. Rushmore makeover

 Today's ice breaker question:

Mount Rushmore honors four U.S. presidents: Washington, Jefferson, Lincoln, and Roosevelt.  If you could add any person to Mount Rushmore, who would you add and why?

Personally, I think I'd take Roosevelt down.  No offense to him, but he's kind of funny looking.  I've always thought he added a "one of these things is not like the other" vibe.  Maybe I'd replace him with John Adams.  Not because he's any better-looking, but where would the United States of America be without John Adams?  That's right.  Also, when was the last time someone made a hit musical out of Teddy Roosevelt's political career?  That's what I'm talking about.

The question says I can add "any" person to Mt. Rushmore, but if I were to go with a non-president, I'd probably choose a woman because if I don't, who will?  That's right.  Maybe I'll add four, so things are perfectly balanced.  Is there enough rock for that?

My top choices are Susan B. Anthony for women's suffrage, Clara Barton for the Red Cross, Harriet Tubman for the Underground Railroad, and...Clare Booth Luce because she wrote good plays and also fought the Commies.

Needless to say, if I were going to going to add a comic strip character to Mt. Rushmore, I'd choose Snoopy.  He could lie on top of everyone's heads like they were a doghouse.

Who's on your short list for Mt. Rushmore?

Very cool!
I have ALWAYS thought Roosevelt was the "one of these things is not like the other" president!! ALWAYS!! I prefer the idea of a substitution to an addition. I would substitute Ben Franklin for Roosevelt because he fits with the Washington/Jefferson time period and where would the US of A be without Ben Franklin? In the dark, that's where! Well. I guess we needed Edison too, but I don't want to ADD to the monument. I want to substitute. If I were forced to add and it had to be a woman I would definitely go with Susan B for suffrage. Clara, whatever, because Red Cross Red Shmross if I couldn't vote and continued to be a second class citizen, if you know what I mean. If I were forced to add and it had to be a man I think I would become a fugitive.

@yorel -

Reagan is better looking than any of my suggestions. With the possible exception of Clare Booth Luce. Just kidding. He was better-looking than Clare Booth Luce, too.

Susan B. Anthony tops my list of the ladies, but if I were going to have four ladies, those are the four I'd pick.

take down roosevelt? seriously? he who essentially shaped the u.s. for the 20th century and is the whole reason we have a national park service? no, no, no. he was the coolest president of all. i'd rather him up there than washington who really sucked as a president but got a pass because he was the first one. and john davidson did a one-man show on TR's life, which was really cool. okay, not a musical, but still.

I think John Adams WAS better looking than Roosevelt. Um ... I would probably put up Ben Franklin or JFK. Because ... its midnight, and those are the only 2 I can come up with.

My son had this as an actual assignment in 6th grade. Posterboard was involved and everything. He chose John Adams because we had just watched the JA miniseries and Paul Giamatti rocked it. Can we choose Paul Giamatti?? No, seriously John Adams was definitely one of the top 4 useful presidents we've had!!

I think the 6th grade assignment definitely required that one choose an actual president, not just "any person." Otherwise we'd have Lady GaGa up there... THAT'S when I become a fugitive.

@sportsgoddess -

TR was a good president. He's just always seemed out of place to me. Possibly because he's funny-looking. (Not funny-looking as in malformed or ugly--just amusing with that big cheesy mustache.) James K. Polk was a good president, too, but he'd also seem out of place with the others. (Can't really remember what he looks like, though.) You make a very good point, though--he's responsible for our national parks service; therefore it is fitting for him to be on a memorial that is managed by the National Parks Service. I will not begrudge TR his place on Mt. Rushmore again.

@Bad_Dogma -

I'm embarrassed to tell you how long I had to think about that one. So I won't mention it.
